does anyone know what the problem might be? right now i'm just sticking my key into the side thing to get it to shift into neutral so i can start the car and go to work. I push the button in, but it won't shift from Park to reverse.

 

do a quick test and see if your brake lights come on when you press the brake pedal. If not then it's most likely a brake pedal switch. If they do then there is another shift lock sensor in the center console that gets gummed up over time and can cause this quite easily and is the second most likely culprit.
