I have an 07 Accord 4-cyl with 82K miles. I believe I should change the engine coolant (since it's almost 4 years old and the car has 82K miles), but I was told that whenever changing the engine coolant, you should always change the hoses to and from the radiotor. Anybody here ever do this? I'm just wondering if there is a DIY on this as I would rather save the cash and do it myself.

One time I had the engine coolant changed, and the hose blew a day after, so I rather change the hoses as well, unless someone here feels that Honda hoses will hold up no matter what!

 

I would expect your hoses should be OK only 3-years old. They age more from age than from miles. But nobody's hoses are indestructable, so use your judgement.

Lower hose is cooler, so it tends to last forever. Then there's all the little hoses - you can drive yourself silly worrying about them too.

To replace them you just open the clamps & remove the hose. Clean up the nozzles & put the new hose on.

This is more of a simple queston/answer post, not a big long "procedure" so I'll move it to General Tech.

 

yeah, that's what blew last time, the little hose. actually, the car is almost 4 years old now, I bought it in '06. I'm assuming the best way to tell if the hose is not doing well is by checking for little cracks. Does the engine coolant just drain out? Sorry, have not done this before, but I assume it is pretty easy as oil change places do it.

 

There's a drain-**** at the bottom of the radiator, sorta near the center. Look down low between engine & radiator for something like a plastic wing-nut.

Then you open the thermostat housing by pressing the little spring clip (#9) & pulling the housing apart.

 

I'm going to go with the Honda hoses are indestructible and will last forever statement. I've had two Hondas go over 200,000 miles with original hoses. The first one (2000 Honda Odyssey) that I traded in May with 225,xxx miles and it and the hoses still looked and felt fine. My other one (1997 Honda Accord LX) just had the radiator replaced last weekend. When I took the hoses off and looked them over, they were still in great shape and very pliable. I elected to put them back on and go for another 100 or so thousand miles. Good Luck.
