CV Axle Problem

CV Axle Problem
So I replaced the upper control arm and the lower ball joint in my mothers 1990 Honda Accord, with a 4 speed automatic transmission. When I put all of it back together I guess I didn't put the axle all the way back in and when I went to move the car out of the driveway I heard a kind of snapping noise and now it won't go into gear. I also stripped the axle threads and axle nut, so I'm replacing the cv axle and now I can't remove the axle nor can I put it all the way in either.
If anyone can give me an explanation of what happened, or how to fix it, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hope the CV shaft gave and not something inside the trans.
Can you cut the axle nut - dremel or some other type of tool. Cut a slit into the nut and then use a chisel or flathead screwdriver (one that you don't mind give up to the cause) and remove it that way.

It's likely the inner CV joint pulled apart. There is nothing but boot rubber to stop the joint from separating if pulled. When pulling a CV axle, there is a warning not to pull on axle outboard of inner CV joint.
It may be easier to remove the entire lower arm to retrieve the broken axle and have shop remove axle remnent.
A new CV axle is likely necessary.
Let us know how it works out.
good luck

Thank you for the help, I did end up popping the cv joint out, I was able to get the boot and pull the axle out then the inner joint casing came right out. Thank you guys for the help, I really appreciate it.
