Default ECU says temp sensor malfunction

1986 Accord lxi. Six flashes from the ECU. Code for temp sensor. Read many threads in hopes of avoiding having to post this. No answer. There are two, what look like sending units near the thermostat. The threads say the one with the single wire is for the dash meter, the one with two wires, the ECU sender. Both of mine have two wires. I disconected them each to see which is for the dash so I could check the resistance of the one for the ECU before I purchase new. The dash meter still reads the water temperature with them both disconnected. HUH? I want to know which sending unit is for the ECU. What is the other one for? And where, if it's not one of the above mentioned, is the sender for the dash meter? Thanks. Willa.

I don't know the 86 setup.

The spoon site that I posted in the Online Manuals thread in the DIY section, has a 1986 accord shop manual that you can download. That will show you what/where the sensors are located and the diagnostic procedures to test them.

Thanks Steeler fan. I downloaded a manual, I also have one, and neither are specific as to which of the two located by the thermostat is for the ECU. I'll check them both and hope I don't electrocute myself with the water glass method. 293,000K.
