Default Speed Sensor Malfunction

I cant pass my state emissions test for my 1998 Honda Accord because of a Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction code P0500. My local Honda dealership said the part to fix the problem costs around $309.00 plus $99.00 for labor. Does this price sound about right? I cant believe how exspensive this repair is gonna run me [:@]. Thanks for any info.

the VSS should not be that expensive unless you are buying them from the dealer.check out all the autoparts store( i.e napa,shucks/checkers,etc). i purchase mine at about $120.00and if your somewhat mechanically incline like me you could fix that your self. just buy a repair manual (preferably Haynes) and go from there.i replaced mine and it took me about an hour at the most.It will save you money and a gratification of doing a job well doneyourself.good luck.post if you have any question.

that sounds high to me for a VSS sensor.... however, I can't seem to find one very easily right now for a 98...
