My gear shift light on the shifter is out, how easy is this to fix without going to the dealer. I have a 1996 Accord EX-L that just turned 190,000 miles today.

 

Yes its the one on the console not on the dash

 

you need to remove the center console and chk to make sure wiring and connections are ok,,,,,,,,if ok chk to see if you are getting power and ground at the little socket if you are replace the bulb ,,,,,\ or just stick a bulb in and see if it works ( make it faster ) if it still does not work than diagnose ,, I would never tell someone to install a part before diagnosing properly but bulbs are real cheap

 

I know it's your baby, but your car is 10 yrs old. My 88 does that. I just deal with it.

 

Well I fixed it today, it was a tiny bulb that you can get at Nava for $1.69, but to put the bulb in is not easy. I was able to take the arm rest, center console out, the bulb holder is underneath the PRNDL, un the upper left hand corner. I had to to get the dealer to re-install the console and all. Make sure you don't lose the tiny screws at all.

The normal charge for the dealer is $45.00 to install the bulb.

It's so much easier to see at night espically since it gets dark so early here.
