I have a 1986 Accord LXi 3 door with 216,000 miles on it. When ever I drive at night my headlights will sometimes go out and then back on. This only happens when they are on low beams and not high beams. When it first happened it only went out for a second or so, but now it can go out for more than 5 seconds. I can switch them to high beams and all is fine. But when I turn them back to low beams the lights will sometimes shut back off. I have noticed when this happens my brake lights and are still on. Just the headlights shut off. Any clues on what it could be?

 

I don't have an 86 shop manual, but looking at a 90 Accord manual, there is a dimmer relay that is toggled by the column stem switch. The dimmer relay contacts may be worn or damaged. On the 90, the dimmer relay is in under hood fuse box.
