I got a 1991 Accord two days ago, and it did not pass emissions. They said that the Hydrocarbons were too high. I was just wondering what the problem could possibly be. This is my first car, so i don't know too much about it. Please leave tips and suggestions.

It was bought from a private person.

 

well only a few things can fail the sniffer test. bad catalytic converter, and/or evap system or egr components.

any check engine light? if not does it light up when you turn your key to the II position before you start the car? making sure the previous owner didnt pull the bulb out.

 

Was it sitting a while, might it be bad gas? Just a thought.

 

You may want to do a tuneup. Distributor cap, distributor rotor, air filter, and spark plugs. For the spark plugs use the NGK ZFR5F-11 plugs. They are the V-power ones.

The dist. cap and rotor I would get at the dealership. You may spend $10 more, but it will be worth the extra cost.

Also, check for codes. There is an index thread at the top of this forum that has a link for checking for engine codes.

 

Hydrocarbons high means unburnt fuel in the exhaust gases, in other words you're running rich. Since you just bought the car I'd do/check basic maintenance items: as suggested spark plugs, maybe wires (visual check condition, cracks), air filter, distributor rotor/cap, ignition timing and idle adjust, oxygen sensor(s) will give you a rich mixture if out.
Then, if you don't have any codes, you may be ok. However if you run rich too long you may be looking at a new cat converter, you should get a code for that though. Also you may need a timing belt, if not already replaced?

 

There is no code for a catalytic converter on a 91.
