Default Importance of timing belt change

I just hit 100,000 miles yesterday, 2009 V6 Accord. How important is the timing belt change now, should I be concerned about getting right on it? Not something I'd know how to tackle myself would be a dealer visit.

Just my opinion. You don't have to do this exactly at 100,000 miles. But I would not let it go to 110,000. The other thing, is some places say "100,000 or 5 years". You are at 7 years. So I would think about doing the belt change sometime this month. Better to be safe and spend $700 and know you are good for another 100,000 miles than have the belt break and spend $2000 or so.

While I've never looked at the maintenance schedule for a 2009 Accord, I *believe* the requirement is 105,000 miles or 7 years, whichever comes first.

To dgp1961, a timing belt service is not something which must be done at the dealership; there are many-MANY independent shops which will do the job properly and usually for less money than a dealership.

Its not something I would say "dont drive your car until its done". But its something I'd definitely want to start saving money for and getting done in the future, say next 6 months or so. As other have said the cost of not doing it and having it break is a lot higher than just doing it.

Thanks for your opinions will definitely get prepared for this expense soon. I'll also ask around and price an independent garage. I'm ok with the dealer doing it and can come up with the $ if needed but hey I'm not opposed to saving some bucks either! I totally expect the dealer to tell me they recommend the water pump also.

Water pump is obvious, but what to also expect is the timing belt auto tensioner. They are a hydraulically assisted piston and commonly leak. As about or be prepared for the cost of the part. There is no additional labor as it has to come off anyway.

My local dealer is running a coupon this month it reads "timing and drive belt change" for 599.00 I called and am doing it in a few days. Person told me yes it includes the Serpatine (sp) belt but I'm wondering if it truly does. Not a bad (dealer) price for changing both. Then of course I'm sure they'll recommend a water pump also (around 300.) Might as well bite the bullet now car isn't going anywhere for now anyway. I just feel a little better having the dealer doing it and I also do not have a "steady" independent mechanic right now anyway.
