Well, the motor I think spun a rod too from her driving it when it was overheated. There is some bottom end noise. At this point I want to put in a used engine. Where is my best bet to get something that is quality?

 

I've only bought one used engine (Dodge Ram 318V8). Here's what I did.

I used car-part.com to locate nearby engines (< 30 miles) and called to confirm availability. I visited several yards to view the engines and decide. I found that some shops pull the engines, seal them and store them inside. Some leave them in the car outside w/ poor weather protection. Some will turn the engine over if you request.

I thought about performing compression tests, but these might not be indicative in an engine thats been sitting for some time.

I also asked for the CarFax on the donor car. I was particularly keen to be sure I was buying an engine from a known donor car. I found there was no way to be absolutely sure of this once engine is separated from vehicle(Vin number is not on engine and Vin/Engine partner numbers are not available.

I mainly decided based on yard appearance (neat) and engine appearance (stored inside). Also the yard furnished CarFax on donor and it was credible.

Well, if you want to do the H22 swap, feel free to go ahead. It's complicated, but I've seen more complicated swaps (like shoehorning a J30 into a Civic, and there is a guy in the UK I read about who dropped an Integra Type R engine into an old-school Mini). The problem that I've seen is that often these motor upgrades end up half-complete with parts all around your garage. And lawn. And living room. But, if you want to give it a go, there is a lot of information available about these upgrades. Honda Tuning magazine has been a good source of technical info for years- you might want to go to their website and sift through some of their archives.

However, I think your best bet is a replacement engine- F22B1. Direct swap.

And my plan of attack is to put back in the SAME exact motor. I found a local Honda motor seller about 50 minutes south of me here in PA. He pulls the motors from donor cars, and gives a 90 day warranty. There is actually a motor he has now, with 83K on it, for $499. Is that a decent price for one of these motors?

 

W/ a 90-day warranty that is a reasonable price IMO.

Do you plan to install yourself or have installed?

I am going to install it myself with the help of a good friend who's awesome with cars. I am pretty experienced myself, but mainly work on VW's. My only question is, can I somehow keep the a/c system in tact when replacing the motor? Right now the car blows crisp cold a/c! I really dont want to evacuate the system.

 

From what I've read it is possible. I can't speak from personal experience. Perhaps others w/ experience will comment.

Checkout some sellers on ebay....I have heard some good things about some in Japan/US that do have compression test results and sell alot of engines

Look for something like this:

Engine looks really clean which is always a good sign. I know they can clean it but usually they dont and its really hard to get in the crevices.

You will want to make sure if OBd1 vs OBd2 matters when buying an engine, think 94/95 are 1 vs 96/97 are 2.
