Default lazy AT engagement

I have just inherited my son's 1994 4 cyl. LX with automatic transmission. It has 250,000 well-maintained miles and runs remarkably well for a car with this mileage. The only issue that I have noticed is that when I put in into first gear, there is a two-second pause and it engages a bit, then again with more force. Sort of a two-step engagement, if that makes sense. The transmission shifts fine otherwise, a bit firm for my taste, but OK otherwise. I have changed the AT fluid twice on the car in the past 20,000 miles (always with Honda brand),the last time just 3-4 thousand miles ago. I can live with the problem, if in fact it is a problem, but would welcome any suggestions about what's up. I would especially be interested to know if this is the beginning of the end for the tranny.

Thanks,

Dave
