Default Loud Engine Noise

I have a 1997 Honda Accord LX and have noticed the engine is much louder than other hondas with the same engine/mileage. Under even normal accelleration the motor seems to be rather loud. I do not have any problems with my exhaust (holes, leaks, etc) but I do have an aftermarket intake. I know non-stock intakes will create some more noise under the hood, but this isnt the sound of air suction, just loud noise. Even idling seems louder. Is this normal for a 146k motor? Anything I can do?

depending on what the noise sounds like means what it may be... aftermarket intakes usually provide a deep sound similar to an exhaust (that's the best way I can describe it...) if it sounds kind of tinny or like a tink tink type sound then an oil change, distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs (Ngk), wires, fuel injector cleaner and maybe even a valave adjustment (if it hasn't been done recently) will greatly reduce the amount of engine noise that you hear, for squealing sounds that's usually a belt of some sort

there is also a really nice full write-up in our DIY section for the valve adjustment if you want to tackle it on your own....

Yeah, I saw that. Looks terrifying.

Actually, it doesnt look that bad, but ive never done 'internal' engine work and am afraid i might make something worse than it is..

With the go/no-go guages it's pretty easy actually but I can understand your concern, I wasn't to fond of doing internal work to start with and since it's a pretty easy job a mechanic shouldn't charge more than like an hour + the gasket so it won't be that expensive.... if it was a timing belt on the other hand then I'd suggest tackling that one....

Because we are regular people who have lives outside of this forum. The engines vary so much by model that we just don't have the time. We offer advice and even if we did have tutorials we can't provide you with mechanical skill. If you feel you can't perform the task then leave it up to a mechanic to do. Not trying to flame you.
