Default Oil Change Amount

I have 2006 Accord sedan, 4 cyl engine. I do 5K oil changes with Honda filters. Owners manual says 4.4 quarts with filter when changing. 4.4 quarts barely gets past the low hole on the stick. I need closer to 5 quarts. Specs page in owners manual lists 5.6 quart crankcase capacity. Am I just draining more oil than Honda thinks one would? Possibly because of how high I have the front of the car jacked up?

Thanks for your help....JGK

Are you checking the oilafter the car is level, has been fired up for a few minutes, andturned offfor 10 minutes or so? Mine takes 4 1/2 on the nose to the top dot providing I do the above.

Well sure Desert, butwe change oil on a lift with the car pretty level. From the times I've dropped oil pans offafter draining theoil, I could say there might be close to 1/2 quart still in the bottom of the pan.
So the point being that the poster jacks up the front of the car therefore tilting the bottom of the oil pan more towards the drain hole; he could well drain out a little more oil.

But the bottom line is to add enough new oilto get it to the proper level regardless of this most excellent point I've made.

Thanks Hondadude et all. I did check the oil level after lowering the car in my garage (level surface) and waiting 15-20 minutes before taking a final measurement (got a phone call, so there was no true waiting ) I had to add 5 quarts, 1 oz. to bring the level to the top hole, approx. 20 oz - 5/8ths of a quart more. I will note this in my maintenance records for future reference.

I wonder if the car has the right dipstick? I also drain mine with the nose in the air (front on ramps) and wait until it quits dripping. It still takes 4 1/2 to fill it to the correct level.

Make sure your dipstick is fully seated. Especially in really cold weather the rubber part of the dipstick may not fully seat itself like it would when its warm out. I always put a bit of oil on that rubber part so that it will fully insert itself in the tube.

I normally rotate tires while the oil drains, so each corner goes up in the air one at a time. I get more oil drained, just like Dude says.

When the manual says 5.6 quarts, that's for a dry fill. For example after rebuilding the engine. There's lots of other places (in addition to the pan) where oil hangs out & doesn't drain.
