Default Oil Question

Hi everyone newbie here, i have a 2000 accord coupe 4-cyl , i had it since it had 50,000 miles and now i have around 130,000. Car runs great, but here is my question, every single oil change i did on the car ive been using rehgualr oil not synenthic. My question is, is it too late to start to using syenthic oil in my car, i hared it bad becuase something about the pistons rings geeting used to the regualar oil. plus i heard syenthic is better for the car and makes it last longer thats why i want to use.

Any help would be apeeciated Thx.

I'd recommend synthetic if your motor isn't in bad shape or anything. I use Mobil1 and my motor rips it up without any oil leaks or burns. Plus the motor is turbocharged. I feel that synthetic has been key to my motor's stregnth and that's all I will put in my honda.

It's not too late to change to synthetic. Would it help the engine last longer? Frankly I really doubt it. Today's regular oils are so good that regular oil/filter changes will keep your engine running longer than you'll want the car. It certainly won't hurt anything but is it worth the extra money?? That's a decision you'll have to make.

I'm not dumping on synthetic oil, I use it in everything including my lawnmower but with your engine @ 130,000+ miles the cost vs benefit has to be considered. At that mileage I would recommend Auto RX for a slow internal cleaning, all you have to do is follow the directions.

EDIT: When I mention synthetic oil I am speaking of full 100% synthetics such as Mobil 1, Mobil 1 EP, Red Line, some Amsoils, Pennz Platinum, and a few others.

Honestly to say the best oil i have found to use in any car, and i used to work for BG and our company did many tests with oil and our enhancing products. anyway its super tech from walmart. i swear to god. mobil1 and shell formula oil are also really good. castrol doesnt even make oil they slaped there name on the bottle and marketed it. just a little info that i thought might be helpful. oh and also when people say once you go synthetic you can never go back is bull****. if you know anything about cars and oil or have worked around the enviroment you would know this. so never fall for that crap.

I user super tech in my dirtbikes (the wet clutches don't like the additives of higher oil types) without any problems.

I'm a newbie also to this forum but not to mechanical things. I have used Walmart Tech 2k synthetic for many years and was encouraged to hear the report from a poster that it was as good as Mobile 1 and a lot cheaper.

Synthetic oils have at least twice the shearing factor of regular oil. Shearing means the molecular chains resist breaking. Shearing is what is commonly referred to as "breaking down". This is important because the rod and crank bearings are under major stress and can easily break the molecular bonds. This is also critical in transaxels and of course hi permormance engines.

Also synthetic oils resist high heat break downat about twice the level of regular oils. This is probably most critical in air cooled engines which modern auto engines aren't. Also synthetics stay fluid at very low temps compared to regular oils.

Bottom line... synthetics outperform regular oils by a factor of at least 2x but cost twice as much or more.

I purchased an '85 Bronco II with 85k on the odometer. It consumed a quart of regular oil every 600 to 800 miles. I started putting Wal tech 2k synthetic in it and now it has 154k miles and burns a quart every 1500k miles. It took several years to see the reduction of oil but it wasn't a fluke. My daughter bought a '94 Probe GT with 102k miles. It consumed regular oil every 1200 miles. She switched to Wal Tech 2k synthetic and it now has 187k miles and uses a quart every 1800k to 2000k miles. This isn't anecdotal but real first hand experience.

If you want to keep your vehicle for a long, long time and want it to last then use synthetics.

Sorry but it just ain't so..........Mobil 1 is a type IV 100% synthetic oil whereas the Supertech synth oils are a severely hydrocracked type III petroleum oil. There's nothing wrong with that and it's likely the best synthetic buy in the market but it is not as good as the type IV full synth oils. Castrol syntec is another example of a type III and it's a good oil but it is priced right up there with the type IV and V true synthetics, that's price gouging to me.. Of course the full synthetics cost a lot more than the Tech synth does and rightfully so.

It's a good product but not a good candidate for extended oil change intervals.

Default RE: Oil Question

if you got the extra money go with syntetic oil , if not stay with regular oil...

If you reside in a cold winter climate i would use 5w-20 in winter and 10w-30 in summer ,,,,,,
if you reside in a mild winter climate i would use 10w-30 all year around

But no matter which oil you decide to use ,i reccomend replacing oil and filter every 3000-3500 miles

Good point on frequency of oil changes. I remember when mobil 1 came into popularity. I purchased several quarts and carefully read the label and discovered recommened oil change intervals of 12k miles. I thought the oil engineers knew much more than myself so I didn't change oil for the 12k. The accord was still new and the oil remained faily clean. I did this only once as I started worring about contamination that regular driving would cause so when I switched to Tech 2k synthetic I started changing oil at 3 - 4k miles. To this day that is my practice, along with a new oil filter. After returning from our 4k + mile trip, the accord hadn't used any discernible amount of oil. Not too bad with 144k miles. Freeway miles are certainly easier on an engine than in-town miles however, fewer hot/cold starts.
