Overheating question
Today I was driving down the freeway, and about 30 miles down the road my CEL came on. I drove a few more miles to where I was going and turned the car off. When I came back about an hour later and started the car, no CEL. On the drive home, about 30 miles down the road the CEL came back on. When I exited the freeway and stopped at the light, my temp gauge shot up. I noticed that revving the engine just a little lowered the temp gauge just as quickly as it went up. My coolant level is fine and my fans work and it doesn't overheat as long as the rmps are up. Any thoughts on this? Do you think the CEL could be related to the overheating? Thank you!
You will have to short the service connector with a thin paperclip to get the codes. Follow the instructions here (http://www.dhost.info/accordinfo/howto/cel.html). Its simple to do and post the codes so we can help.
When you say the coolant level is fine, did you let the car cool down and take the radiator cap off? You should see coolant at the top of the radiator. Don't just look at the overflow tank marks.
Since the engine heated up at a stop, the cooling fans could be the problem. Start the car and turn on your A/C. Both fans should turn on. If not, verify that you have 12V across the connector to the broken fan. If you have 12V, you need to get a new fan. You can also try hitting the fan motor with a screwdriver (when A/C is on) to see if it turns on. That will also verify a bad cooling fan motor.

I tried shorting the service connector today but I didn't get any code from the CEL. I tried several times and I never got anything to happen. Could the code have been lost from turning the car on and off a few times? Does the CEL need to be on to get the code?
