The light means the engine computer detected a problem and stored a code.
If you open the common DIY threads sticky on this forum, you will find a link on how to check engine codes. Your ecu is under the driver's seat.
It also has a link for online manuals, where you can get an 86-89 shop manual that will help a lot.
