Default reset timing of '83 honda

Great!

Would inconsistent idling cause the vehicle to have [:'(] excessive fuel smoke from the exhaust? If so, which one should I do first the timeing or the idling?

Thanks, J

Hey all
This is J and I have a '83 honda Accord I am getting ready for someone and I need to reset the timing because the distributor was moved accidentally whicle I was tuning it. I purchased a timing light but I need assistance with how to go about readjusting it.

on the tranny there is a little opening (it may be covered by a rubber plug), start the engine and get it up to operating temp, connect the timing light to the #1 spark plug and point it at that little opening, you'll see a line in there and a point that indicates proper timing, watch that line and rotate the distributor a small incriment and you'll see the line move, adjust it so that the line and point are lined up then tigten the distributor down and you should be all set.
