Default Right Rear Brake Doesn't Engage with E-brake

Hi guys,

I noticed that my right rear (disc) brake doesn't engage when I pull up the e-brake. I checked the equalizer and it's uneven when the e-brake is engaged (see picture), but even when its off.

Will adjusting the equalizer fix this issue, or is there something else going on?

Cable is too long or mote likely broken preventing actuation.

Frozen brake actuation mechanism and cable corrosion may be reason for cable failure. Remove RR wheel and inspect e-brake mechanism and cable. Ericthecarguy has a good youtube video on freeing the e-brake mechanism on the caliper.

good luck

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention that the right rear brake works fine with the brake pedal. Does this help isolate the issue?

No. The mechanism for the emergency brake is mechanically connected to the caliper by a cable. The caliper uses hydraulic pressure when you hit the brake pedal.

Did you figure this out yet?

Since the right-side cable pulls more than the left, it sounds like something is disconnected - rather than seized. Is the cable attached properly to the lever back at the wheel? Is the lever properly connected to the brake internals?

I had my mechanic inspect the brake caliper during my last oil change. He says that the caliper lever isn't moving when the e-brake is engaged. I'm guessing the cable have snapped? Is there a way to check that the lever is working fine?

You can remove the e-brake cable from the caliper and see if the cable tries to retract when you pull the emergency brake. An assistant pulling the e-brake while you watch the cable in the back will be easiest. Here is a video on replacing the caliper, where he has to remove the e-brake. It can be a pain.

Seems more likely that the cable has corroded stuck in it's housing (rather than snapped). Either way, you have to watch it working & see what's what.

Thanks for the help guys!

I probably won't get around to this until next summer since it's getting really cold out. But I'll report back when I've pinpointed the issue.
