Get a check-engine light? Flashing D4 lamp?
If the VSS were bad, you'd get one of those warning lamps. If not, it's in the wiring somewhere "downstream" from where the wire splits off for the PCM.
It might be a bad connection where the wiring harness plugs into the back of the cluster. Or maybe the tachometer itself is broke.
