So my car is a 2002 LX 4cyl. with 100,000 miles. I am taking it to a mechanic, someone I trust, to do the work.

I am simply researching what is the process to replacing the timing belt, not a step by step explanation for me to do it in my garage just a "make sure and replace this" while they're in there kind of a deal.

The car runs fine and I am just curious.

What else should be replaced as preventative maintenance when they do the timing belt?

You'll get various advice about this, mostly along these lines...

2 timing belts (one for cam, other for balance-shafts)
new water pump
new oil seals for camshaft, balancer shafts
new tensioner pulleys (for the 2 timing belts)

No real guarantees, but chances are one or more of these things will fail before ANOTHER 100k miles, and then you'll have to repeat all that labor $$$ to remove the timing belts all over again. If you were gonna do the work yourself, then it depends on your threshold of pain for re-doing all that work.

I've heard different advice for the shaft oil seals. Some people say if they're not leaking, leave them alone.

 

i would add to what Jim suggested......... the crank seal + alt and p/s belts,and have them install a retainer on the balan shaft seal ,
