tranny problem
Hi, all:
I have this 99 accord coupe LX with 125000miles on it. I got this car about 5 monthes ago and didnt drive much. I just noticed that my tranny acting weird, whenever I slow down for a stop or a turn (but not completely stop), and slowly accelerate after that, I feel like lost power for less than a second and everything back normal after that. I'm worried about this tranny, is it the typical symptom of a toasted accord tranny. other than that, it shift fine (a little bit harsh but kinda expected from an old car). Is there anything I can do to prolong my tranny's life? thx [/align]

RE: tranny problem
Use genuine Honda ATF, that seems to work better than Dexron.
It sounds like the tranny is still in 2nd gear when you get back on the gas. It takes a fraction of a second to shift down to 1st, which is normal. Roll into the gas more slowly, dont just jam it.

Hi, Jim:
thx a lot for the reply. Funny thing is, the symptom is more noticable when I press apply gas slowly, and when it happen, I c the rpm slight jump up about 100-200. Honestly, I dont know how a downshift feel like, but what I'm experiencing is like car was in neutral for a split second and caught the gear again after that. I'll try the drain and refill later any way. BTW, how much ATF I will need to do the job.

RE: tranny problem
Watch how dirty the drained fluid it, & judge whether to repeat the drain/fill. The torque converter doesnt drain, so you only get about 1/3 of the total fluid. A littleless than3quarts for each drain/fill.

RE: tranny problem
thx, guys. I just checked my ATF. It's still in clear pink color. So will it cause any problem since during and after "draining and fill", i will probably run with dexron and Z-1 mixed together. and How long do I need to drive between each "draining and fill" since it will at least take me 3 times to change out most of the dexron. thx

RE: tranny problem
I guess 1/2 hour of driving or more, so its well-mixed. But you could wait longer if thats convenient. Even wait for the next weekend or whatever.
Since you say its really like neutral, this may be the sign of impending doom for your tranny. Honda 98-02 automatic trannys are sorta prone to problems. I had a 98 which did not screw up, so Im not the best expert on how torecognize it.

The neutral at shift thing is the only thing that I noticed different between my V6 and my ex-gfs i4 .... both 6th gen autos. Immediately following a quad-fluid change, the tranny died .... well, a week later.

Reset the ECU (pull fuse #13 in the box at the right-front door hinge). I think in 99 the tranny controller does some limited learning of your driving behavior. Reset forces it to learn all over again, maybe erase some bad habits.
Since it only jumps about 200 rpm(?) maybe itll be OK for a long while. Hard to say without driving firsthand.
Lets see what happens when you replace the Dexron with Z1.
