Trouble during cold starts
Hi,
New to the forum.
I have an Accord LX, '99, approx 130K miles.
Every once in a while I have trouble starting it up (especially in the mornings)
When I turn on the ignition, I just hear a "clicking" sound but nothing else. It doesn't even feel as if it is cranking the engine. All you hear is a clicking sound. After 2-3 clicks, it starts normally.
Also, it doesn't happen every time, only once or twice a week. I have a brand new battery, so that can't be the problem.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,

Do you have a manual or auto?
A manual tranny has a switch on the clutch pedal to start the car, and sometimes you need to find the "sweet spot" or replace that switch.
Another common problem is a failing ignition switch on the back of the key cylinder in the steering column. Its a fairly easy and cheap fox for that as well.

I have a 5 speed manual trans.
Is the switch on the clutch pedal something that I can access easily? What about the ignition switch?
How do I know which one is my car's problem? Will I have to take it to the shop to fix it?

Push in the clutch and turn the key like youre going to start it. If it doesnt start, keep the key where it is and slowly let the clutch out until you find "the sweet spot"
. If it still wont start, put the clutch in and turn the key, if it doesnt start wiggle the key. If you have to find the "sweet spot" you probably have a bad pedal switch, if you have to wiggle the key, the ignition switch is shot. I think there was acutally a recall on the ignition switch. You can call Honda service at any dealer and tell them your VIN and theyll be able to tell you if it has been recalled or not.
It depends on how mechanically inclined you are to fix it...

Take a look above the clutch pedal. Youll see the switch above the pedal - the pedal pushes this button when the pedal is UP. Sometimes the problem is obvious, like the wire unplugged or loose...
I tried all the above suggestions but none of them were a permanent fix. One day the car just wouldn't start. SO had to take it in to the shop. They said the starter was gone and had to be replaced. Has been working OK since then.
