Default windshield wiper switch

I took my car to a garage and they said my switch on the column was bad (ohms wrong) for the switch. The wipers work intermittently and tend not to work so well when it gets damp, but the same thing will happen when its hot & dry. Moving the arm manually works and doing this eventually the wipers will work. I am at a loss and do not believe the mech, he supposedly checked my lights also and said the collumn control on that is bad too. He also said I have to have the steering collumn removed to fix this. I hate mech who lie to just change parts.

ouch... get a second or third opinion. You can tell a good mechanic that doesnt spit prices out right away.... AND shows you and explains in common english how and why a part works or is not working, especially if he asks you to go get another opinion.
