If you can borrow a gage you can see how much is in and how much you still owe the unit.

did you retrofit the the a/c system in your car ?? 91 accord takes r-12 ,, 2, 12 oz cans should be enough to make the system cool ,,,,, system capacity is 32-34 oz

I wish I knew someone with a gauge I could borrow. Maybe Autozone loans them. The car had already been converted to R134a when I bought it.

Autozone does loan out a gauge set so I'll do that this week sometime. But today we went for a drive and the AC actually got nice and cold. When I first started the car and turned on the AC I looked at the sight glass and it was foamy but then cleared up. I guess I just need to top of the refrigerant. My daughter is happy that she now has a reliable car with AC. That was my goal. Thanks for all the help!

I was going to say that I didn't see anything about evacuating the air out of the system before adding refrigerant. Air in the system will cause poor cooling performance. But now you say it works? So that's good.

I found out the system takes about 34 oz so I added almost another whole can. Now it's very cold and consistent. How do you go about evacuation air in the system?

If you discharged the R134a from the system when you removed the compressor, then you should have hooked a vacuum pump to the a/c system to remove all air and residual moisture.

If you just unbolted the compressor, and left the lines attached, then no air should have gotten into the system, but you wouldn't have had to recharge either.

Air in the system can't be good for the compressor and probably makes the system less efficient.
