Motor blown, what to do?
New member here. Never belonged to a forum before now. I recently purchased a 2009 Honda Accord EX 2.4. A few thousand miles later (148,000) I heard a horrible sound coming from the engine. Turns out one of the timing chain guides had exploded and sent aluminum and plastic shrapnel into the oil pan, and the chain had skipped a few teeth on both the intake and exhaust cams. I removed the timing cover and oil pan and found lots of goodies - metal and plastic from the guides. The chain had also chewed the block a bit, but not significantly. New timing chain and guides and VTC actuator. Tested for compression after timing and before reassembly. Tested good. Less than 20 miles into the test drive the motor is coming apart - rod knocking. The car is in great shape inside and out. I'm thinking of replacing the engine, mainly because I can't bear to take the loss after a $9000 investment ($8000 for the car, roughly $1000 for tools and repairs). I'm also mechanically inclined and like to tinker, but I've heard these engines are a booger to pull out of the car. Also, if I do it, I'd like to make performance upgrades if affordable. Here are my questions: I realize it's a subjective question, but is it worth it? All opinions welcome. Also, do I need to worry about the transmission since it has 148,00 miles on it? Looks like the engine has to come out for the transmission to be pulled. Am I wrong? And for anyone who's for replacing the engine, any ideas for what generation of engine?
Thanks.
Thanks.
That link allows you to search all bone yards in pretty much all of North America, local, regionally, nationally..., you get the idea.
