Transmission
Well, its been a long journey for me and my girl, 221,758 on the transmission to be exact. 174000 miles which I put on myself, she's now in the shop waiting on surgery. Don't worry girl, I'm not going anywhere, I'll be there when you've recovered.

I replaced all 8 wheel studs on the two front hubs this afternoon.
We recently had our tires replaced ... the rears about two weeks ago, and the fronts just last Friday. When my son drove the car home on Saturday I noticed a bolt missing. Upon further inspection I saw that one of the wheel studs had snapped off! Then I checked the other side ... one snapped off there as well! Ugh.
My first thought was that the tire center tightened the nuts way too much. So I checked by hand and they felt okay. Turns out the tire center convinced my son to take a free set of Gorilla brand security wheel nuts, which uses an adaptor that is basically a 4 inch long "tube" socket, converting 19mm hex into the star pattern for these bolts. The problem with this "tube" is that you can put a huge bending stress on the studs when you are trying to tighten the nuts if you don't support the head of your wrench properly. I had a hard enough time with my speed wrench trying to not push down on this adapter tube. So my guess is that the tire center bent the studs enough to fracture them, and they popped off somewhere on the freeway.
So, not trusting and of the studs on those front wheels, I replaced them all.
Fortunately, the studs on these hubs can be pounded in and out pretty easily, and when you remove the brake caliper and bracket there is room behind the rotor to remove and insert the stud bolts.
Tomorrow it's off to the tire center with old parts in hand to see what they will reimburse me for.
