The #1 plug wire is always the one farthest away from the flywheel. Or closest to the alternator drive pulleys.

No. Your timing marks are on the front pulley, not on the flywyeel.

There should be a pointer molded into the lower timing cover, & notches in the outer rim of the pulley. One notch all by itself is TDC. To the left of that is a set of three, the big middle one is stock timing. The 2 little ones are +/- tolerance around stock.

But on 2001 I think the timing is not adjustable. You should find that the mounting holes for the distributor are not slotted.
