Need advice 1996 Honda Accord
I have a 1996 Honda Accord that I could not smog due to a check engine light. I got a fix it ticket for registration which is all paid up. I just have to have the car pass the smog test.
I took it to a mechanic that said that by the codes that it needed a speed sensor and vapor canister purge sol. He quoted me 500 to 500 for parts and labor. He also told me to think about it because a car that old may not be worth fixing and that it may not solve the problem.
He put a speed sensor in and called me to pick up the car. He said that it may be a faulty speed sensor as the company he buys from sends him a lot of faulty parts. He's ordered another one but said that he did not think that was the problem and recommended that I just junk the car. He said that he suspects it the wiring and does not know anybody that can even work on that.
I'm just devastated as I am fighting stage 4 cancer and have no money for another car. This car runs perfectly and has no engine trouble other than speedometer and odometer not working. I did go through a CHP smog checkpoint and it passed. It makes no sense to me to have to junk a perfectly running car that won't pass smog because of a check engine light.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello,
You didn't say what the check engine light code was.
My experience with so many error messages is that they
often have nothing to do with the problem, and
have nothing to do with the solution.
I have had better luck with searching for the code on Youtube.
One code I got years ago, P0401.
Exhaust Gas Recirculation Insufficient Flow
But the solution had nothing to do with the EGR valve.
The solution was to clean out some passages, filled with carbon.
