1989 Honda accord problems
so I just financed an '89 Honda accord to build my credit up. First the starter went out so I replaced it. Now ny brake lights don't work and my idol is fluctuating between 1100 rpms and 2000 rpms. I checked all my fuses and bulbs, and wiring. I am not sure what else it could be. Does anyone know how to explain where to look to figure put the brake light situation. And for my idol fluctuating I have no clue what could have spark this. Thank you to anyone who can help!
Thanks for joining HAF.
Sounds like you have a few issues, we will try to help....PS, I really like the 3rd gen (86-89) Accords. I've owned several different ones over the years.
A few questions.....what trim level is the car (DX, LX or LXi), or another way of getting there, is the car FI or carb'd?
For the brake lights, be sure the "stop" fuse in the underhood fuse box is good.....from there, do you have a voltmeter or at least a test light to do some testing?
Last, just for my own reasons....how many doors - 2, 3 (hatch) or 4?

Ok, for the idle....check the coolant level and bleed then bleed it, the bleeder is on the t-stat where the upper hose connects to the engine. You do this with the heat set to MAX so you get the air out of the heater core.
Again, for the brakes, I'd like to start with the fuse under the hood....then check the brake light switch, next will be the right rear brake light failure sensor.
PS- You have the same 3rd gen that I have left in the driveway
