Default 1994 Accord EX CEL on and car wont start

94 4cyl EX 240k When I get in on a cold start turn the key and the lights will go on, then off except the CEL light which will sometimes stay on. Eventually the D light will start blinking if the CEL doesn't turn off. After a few minutes, anywhere from 60 secs to 5-10 minutes, Ill hear a click in the dash area and the CEL will go off and she'll start right up. After it's warm this doesn't happen much that I can recall. I changed the main relay but same thing still happens. Any ideas?

You really need to diagnose before throwing parts at the car.

Follow the directions in the link below. Count the CEL flashes and the D4 flashes. Tell us what codes were flashed from each light.

The main relay diagnosis was given to me by the cars previous owner who had a similar problem and fixed the problem by changing the main relay. CEL doesn't flash and the D light will flash continuously until I shut the car off, or turn the key to the off position when it won't start. I read the main relay link in the new members must read thread as well. If I get a chance today I'll try and see if there are any stored codes to post. Thanks.

No stored codes?

Description has appearance of Main Fuel Relay problem, but could equally be a faulty ECM.

good luck

Checked the codes today and no CEL code. Just D4 code 14, 1 long blink then 4 short blinks. Of course she started right up today as I can hear the main relay engage almost as soon as I turn the key.

For the TCM code 14, some possible causes:
  • Faulty TCM (Transmission Contol Module)
  • Faulty ECM (Engine Control Module)
  • Short or open in Shift Acknowledge wire (Brn/Wht) between TCM and ECM
1.Turn ignition ON and wait for at least 2 seconds.

Measure the voltage between TCM terminal D16 and A26 or A25.

Is there at least 5 volts?
Yes – Check for loose TCM connectors. Can also be faulty TCM.

2. Turn ignition off.

Disconnect the 26P harness connector from the ECM and the 26P harness connector from the TCM.

Check for continuity in the Brn/Blk wire between ECM harness connector pin A18 and TCM harness connector pin D16.

Is there continuity?
If no continuity, repair open in Brn/Wht wire in the harness connectors.

If there is continuity, can be faulty TCM or ECM.

*******************************

The no start condition may or may not be related to the TCM code 14; for example, a bad ECM can cause issues.

If you haven't done so, you may want to inspect the battery cables closely (look for corrosion in the cable, connectors, etc.) and also get the battery tested.

I don't have the tools to check for continuity so I'll have to take it to a mechanic for that. Battery tested fine as well as alternator. No problem with cables as far as I can tell. I will add, that for the past year the speedometer had worked intermittently. The starting problem has been about 4-5 months.
