Default 1994 accord ex transmission issue?

ok so i bought a 1994 honda accord ex off a friend of mine. he said the trans was no good it only goes in reverse so i thought ok ill have it replaced the car is really clean and that was the only problem so i have it towed to my house and it sat for a few weeks i changed the battery and now it will go in drive but it takes a few seconds before it catches? like maybe 5-8 seconds? i drove it around the block a few times and after a few trips around it seems to not move that well anymore? i asked a few people what it could be? some say the at computer some say they shift solinoids? i wanna know what it could be before i just get a trans? i dont wanna put money for something i might not need!!! any help would be apprecitaed thanks!

Check the fluid level first.

Is the D4 light flashing? If it is flashing at times, try to retrieve any trouble code(s) by jumping the blue service connector with a small paper clip or wire, that is located under the passenger side dash. There is info. regarding this at the sticky up top of this forum.

Generally, the 5th generation Accords (94-97) automatic transmission were pretty good. They didn't fail that often if properly maintained. My previous 95 Accord went 300,000 miles without any problem and it is still going after I gave the car to my nephew. The TCU was not really an issue on most of them. They can fail due to running with low fluid levels which may be due to slow leaks at the axle seal, or not changing the fluid regularly, etc. Most of the ones I hear about with transmission problems required replacement or rebuild.

Does the D4 bulb even light up under normal conditions? Just asking to to see if the bulb was blown. If the bulb is okay, try jumping the blue connector anyways to see if it flashes out any trouble code.

It may end up being the transmission. You sometimes can find relatively good used transmission for a couple hundred at salvage yards, etc. One of my buddy mechanics either finds good used ones or he rebuilds them himself.

Dsalzano94 - Start you own thread, so this one is not as confusing. I would check for engine and transmission codes. In the common diy thread on top of the gen tech help forum, you can open a link to checking engine codes.
