Default 1999 3.0 hard start

Hi can someone help please. First start take about 5-8 seconds of cranking. When it starts it run a little rough for a minute. No codes, no smoke. If I turn the ign. on 4 times without turning the starter over it will fire up in 1-2 seconds or if I turn off and restart it fires up good. I hear the fuel pump pumping for a couple seconds each time the ign. it turned on. I'm thinking the fuel pressure is bleeding off over night. How can I check it? I have searched but can not find where the fuel pressure regulator is located, ?? thanks Eric

Find where fuel delivery line joins the fuel rail. There is usually a banjo bolt that you can loosen. Crack this bolt when engine has been sitting for some time, and see if fuel pressure causes dribble or nothing, or large spray of fuel.

I'm not sure about 3L V6, but some have fuel pressure regulator or fuel pressure pulse dampner on the fuel rail. If this is a non-return fuel system, it uses a pulse dampner and not a regulator.

good luck

I loosened the fuel line and it still had pressure this morning... I checked the voltage with ign. on out of the main rely to the fuel pump. It has 12 volts for a few second which is normal but when I engage the starter no power for a second then it has 12 volts. I ordered a new main rely. I hope it fixes it. I hate to throw parts at it but it sounds like a part that fails often.

It could be a flaky ignition switch assy. These are also a common fault. MFR may be problem also. No easy way to confirm which.

good luck

I've had the problem for months, I just did the ignition switch recall two weeks ago hoping that might fix but no dice. When I get the MFR plugged in i'll let you know if it fixes it.

MFR = main fuel pump rely. My problem ended up being a hairline crack in the sending unit. The fuel pump worked but had it had to be primed several times to get it to pressurize the system. I figured it out by removing it and pressuring it, I then could feel the air leaking out the side. This is the part.
