Default 91 accord trans

i have a 91 accord lx. recently the trans wouldnt go into convertor lockup. now the trans light blinks after driving for a bit. when it gets warmer the engine light comes on. some times it hunts between 3rd and 4th gears whe coasting. the speedometer also wont work. i got a 17 code from the engine light and a 4 code from the trans light. i am suspecting the vehicle speed sensor. how can i test it? also after driving for about 45 minutes in 84 degree weather, i shut it off then restart and drive. it works just fine. whats going on in there?

you can download a 91 shop manual from the online manuals thread in the DIY section. Both codes point to a bad VSS along with the symptoms. That shop manual will have the installation instructions too.

For testing you will likely need a volt meter and some back probing will be involved. There should be three wires. Use the volt meter to test for 5V and continuity to ground (likely black wire).

The VSS are known to go bad, so replacing it will likely solve your problem.

Good luck.

A new VSS is very inexpensive, and available online extensively or on ebay (<$25 bucks for my last VSS).

good luck

Check ebay for "accord VSS". Yes, a new OEM VSS from Honda and installed by a Honda shop would be about $200.

good luck
