Check for engine and transmission codes. There are some transmission codes that will not cause the S light or D4 light to flash. Find the link for checking engine code in the common diy thread on top of the gen tech help forum.

Check the fluid level in the transmission. Also, when was the last time the fluid was changed?

Is this on flat ground or in a hilly region?

The trans fluid is at correct level, and was changed about 800 miles ago, the car surges on hills or flat ground
