Hello,

I have a '93 Accord AT with ~106K. Since I bought it (<1 yr), it has always seemed to shift a little harder than it should. The most pronounced was when it down shifted from 2nd into 1st (~15 mph) when there was a clunck noise and vibration.

However, recently it seems to be getting worse. With every gear change there is a slight lag and then the shift occurs with a small, but noticeable cluck.

So, the question is: If I have some work to do (timing belt has never been changed, sway bar end link broken, anti-lock brake sensor), should I just put it off to see if the tranny gets worse?

Would a tranny shop be able to drive and diagnose it?

Do you know the history of the transmission? If you dont I would suggest changing the fluid and adding Honda DW-1 fluid. There are many threads on here about, with instructions on it. If you take it somewhere make sure they put Honda ATF in it, and are not doing a flush but a drain and fill.

 

Sometimes clunks when the transmission shifts and vibrations are due to broken engine mounts. Broken engine mounts are usually most noticeable when shifting out of Park.

 

Have to agree with redbull-1 on the clunking. as far as the shifting issues (if memory serves) the ecu and tcu are both mounted on the pass side floor board right under the ac evap housing. When the housing starts leaking it leaks right on to the tcu and then it rust and corrodes and doesn't shift right. might be worth looking into.

 

The adjustment of the trans throttle cable has a great impact on shift quality. Download a 90-93 Accord manual from Online Manuals links in DIY forum for adjustment procedure.
