96 Accord Tranny

Hey everyone, I have a few technical questions for you guys, and am hoping to get a little info on them. I personally don't own an Accord, although one of my friends does. The automatic tranny in his 96 4cyl. is totally gone. A minor accident with a curb cracked open the housing.
Basically, I was going to try to fix it for him because this type of thing can get rediculous at a mechanic. I've done a bunch of tranny jobs and swaps before, although I've never done an automatic. I've done the brakes on this particular Accord before, and they were a bear. I'm sure the job ahead is pretty undesirable.
My question to you guys is this: are there any options as far as swappable transmissions for the Accord - as in, perhaps the auto's from a newer/older model, or perhaps one of Honda's other vehicles would fit without issue. Right now I am searching around a couple of junkyards, and was wondering if there are any other models to search from. I know that Honda guys often swap in B16's, B18's, H22's and the like, so I don't know how crazy this question is. I'm from the Subaru camp myself, and I know that pretty much every engine/transmission will swap into pretty much every model (I'm exaggerating a little but it sometimes seems that way).
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm sorry if I could have found this info by search, but I'm at work right now and I thought this might be common knowledge in the Honda community. Thanks again!

Yes, a used one - that's his question.
What range of Accord years would swap into his '96. I don't know the answer, but I can't believe that it's a strange one-year-only tranny that's different from all the other years.
If I had to GUESS, I'd say any 5th-gen 4-cyl model, so '93-'97???

94-97 trans are the same animals, the main case is around $225 new cost;
you might call around the Junkyards and find a 'core' for 1/2 that much then swap the cases.
Maybe an Independent Honda shop would have a core laying around, we used to give them to the scrap metal people.I also know a guy that took a case to a machine shop and they used the "Lumnaweld" process on it.
If you do pull the case off remember that the most forward shaft nut is left hand thread.

Well after looking around it seems pretty tough to fix this sucker on the cheap. The problem is that the car has 240,000 miles on it, and the exterior hasn't been cared for that well over most of its life. The paint is pretty bad - clearcoat peeling, faded, scratches and cracks. Mechanically, it was running just about perfect though, although it is a Honda, so that's pretty much par for the course. It's just a tough situation, the car isn't worth very much as it is and isn't in very good shape. The money needed to fix the car pretty much exceeds its value.
I think my friend is going to get an 07 Civic Si as a replacement. That was the plan anyway, but this little accident has accelerated this decision by a few months.
Anyone need a parts car? Just joking, although it is going to be tough to find a way to get rid of this car.
