On the heater control panel, the mode buttons are used to select the vents the air flows from (see attached image).

These buttons on the control panel operate a mode control motor to move doors for the air flow. There may be an issue with either the wiring, motor, control linkage, or heater control panel.

I can not see the link in that post. It's a bunch of gibberish.

1. Generally, the forum rules don't allow live links; so, that is why the poster altered the web address. Just copy and paste, and then replace the "(dot)" with "."

2. Take a look at the manual and if you still need guidance let us know and I will try to write up some test procedures. A multimeter will help; but, there can be some limited testing even without one, such as connector direct battery power and ground to the motor.

I was finally able to try and work on this problem. I was able to manually assist the motor in switching too the defroster. I believe that it is not in the controls but maybe the motor is getting weak and not able to complete the switch. After i helped it switch I unplugged the motor so it would not be able to switch again. It's a temp fix but not permanent.

Working that action manually might give you a clue whether...

1. the motor is getting weak like you said.

2. the motor is OK but the linkage & air doors have excessive friction.

On the 95 EX I had, I would have to re-lube the linkage for the mode control motor every two years or so.

A bit of lube is a pretty easy/cheap try.

I didn't look at the diagrams to compare the difference in the set up between your car and the 5th gen I'm talking about.
