A couple of comments i would like to make
# 1 ,, I would be leary of this mechanic first he told you that there is carbon built up below the manifold ( i agree with Jim ) most likely,,, insufficient egr flow,, then he says it needs a cat ?? those have totally different codes ..
You should and have the right to know what is wrong with your car so asking for the code(s) is normal , it should not annoy the mechanic at all . and there should be no need for you to go to autozone to have the code re-read .. the mechanic should provide it and explain you the situation ,
But like everyone here as stated ,, it would help us help you if you could get the code ( s ) and input it here..
alsop for the price he is charging you $ 325 he is installing a non-factory cat
By the way how many miles in your car ??
