Default starting problems

I'm new here hope this is the right section to post this question in. I have a 1996 accord lx 4 cyclinder. I just recently have had a starting problem with the car and there's no Rhine or reason for it. Sometimes the car will start right up others it will click and few times then not click then the starter will engage a half rotation and then eventually it will start. I've replaced the starter about 4 months ago. Any help would be appreciated.k

You have posted in the CORRECT section. OK then...

Kinda sounds like battery connections. Check & clean & tighten the connections at BOTH ENDS of both battery cables. Dirty or corroded connections are one thing that can cause it. Sometimes its even a bad connection where the end-lug is crimped onto the stranded cable itself.

I've done that several times over and even had other people do that. Cause everyone tells me that. There's not a bit of corrosion. I've read every post on here about starting problems and there all different from mine.

If you're sure the battery connections are good, the starter solenoid has contacts that wear out w/ time. Symptoms are loud click (solenoid throwing), but no starter turn over since the contacts won't pass current to starter.

Fix is to replace or rebuild the starter. New contacts are possible, but more trouble than most folks want to deal with. google "honda starter contacts" if you're interested. There are also videos around the www.

good luck

Try the caveman test. When it doesn't start; hit the starter with a broom handle or some kind of stick while someone is turning the key to START. If that makes it start, it's the contacts like Tex said.

Ok ill try it just figured that wouldn't be it considering I just replaced it few months back like 4 months ago. Guess it could be a bum starter.

Well, yeah the new starter is why I suggested the cables first. But it is possible to have a bad starter out of the box.

You said it sometimes turns a bit then stops... Does the starter turn the engine weakly/slowly? Or does it turn "normal" strength then stop? A flaky ignition switch might explain that. When it won't start, check the small wire at the starter. It should have battery voltage while the key is turned to START.
