The wiring is certainly where I would be looking for a problem... Got any way to look at the signal? (most people don't have an oscilloscope)

Do you have a wiring diagram that shows where the VSS circuit goes through any multi-pin plugs?

 

I'll look Jim. Believe it or not I do have a big old school ocsilloscope, but I wouldn't know how to use it!
