Why do you have to reset the ecu after you put on a cai or sri?

Your ECU is self teaching. And since you have installed an item that will draw in so much air it needs to recalculate the fuel to air ratio for best efficiency.

either pull the main fuse (#15 under the hood 7.5amps I believe) for a couple minutes or just remove the negative battery cable for a few minutes... if you have a newer car with a "anti-theft" stereo be aware that you may need to get the unlock code from the dealership after you do this reset

And if you don't reset it, then it will throw some code and the light will come on right? And if the light didn't come on, then it's all fine?

If you don't reset it then the computer will run based on what a stock intake does so you don't get the full potential for economy and power.... It typically won't throw a light though....Since the computer is constantly "learning" it will eventually (over a long period of time if you don't reset it) adjust to what you have on, I put a CAI on my civic and didn't reset the computer and it was fine....
