Default 2006 Oil Change

I just bought a 2006 Accord. I read the manual and tried to look for the recommended miles between oil change. It looks like the new Accord detects when you need oil change. Wondering how many miles the oil will last?

It depends on a lot of variables. Change it the first time @ 5000 miles if it tells you to or not......filter too.

i would even say change it no later than 3000 for the first time. tons of metal is being shaved off your motor when it is breaking in. some people change their oil after 500 miles when its new.

I would normally agree except that Honda is ADAMANT about leaving it in till 5000 miles due to the high level of moly in the oil. Exxon makes the high moly break in oil for Honda and it is indeed special compared to others. Uh, I changed mine around 3500 miles to Mobil 1 0W20 . So I almost did what Honda said!

So officially 5k, a tad sooner won't hurt. I've added zero oil since break in (3/4 qt during break in) and now it's @ 20K. After that it's up to you if you want to go with the oil monitor or not. I would tend to trust the oil life monitor.....with a grain of salt. The only way to positively know is with a series of used oil analysis' that will show a trend.

I don't know about changing oil while breaking the motor in, but i do know that it is a good idea to change the oil about every 3000 miles. It says 5k in the owner's manual, but my shop teacher always told us that 3k is better since alot of driving is done in the city and the engine gets dirty due to the stuff in the air. Also, for $20.00 you can get a magnetic oil pan bolt. So if there is metal shavings coming off the motor, it ends up stuck to the bolt instead of running around screwing up your bearings and what not.

I looked up the maintenance guide on the Honda web site and I think it states 6,250 between oil changes. I think thats a long time between oil change?!?!?!?! That is for the 4 cylinder.
