That sideways play is the REAL problem why it keeps breaking rotors. You need a new distributor (bad shaft bearing).

Best is to use a timing light to properly adjust your spark timing with your new distributor. Probably sorta OK to mark it well & put the new one in the same position. Got a timing light? Setting your spark timing isn't that difficult.

A timing light is a good tool to have if you keep working on cars.

About the PM friend request - no offense, but I'd rather solve things here in the forum. The whole idea is for other people to see this when THEY come across the same problem.

Since your check engine light turned on, you should get the code.

Even when the check engine light turns off, the computer will store that code for a while, so you can retrieve it.

I am betting your dist. has a worn bushing and that is your starting problem as the rotor is tearing up the cap contacts or is too far away from them depending on where the shaft places the rotor(it has to line up with the button in the center of the cap and the contact for each cylinders. I have never bought a dist for an Accord so I don’t know if you have to reuse any parts but it is easy to remove and replace. If you install it correctly it should slide right in if not you have the shaft a 180 degrees off. You should set the timing when you are done. On my Accord there is a jumper below the grove compartment you jump and then set the base timing.

Let us know how it turns out
