Default 1995 Accord Head Gasket Job

What all should be checked and automatically replaced with a head gasket job. The plastic rear cover melted on the front of the head. I am planning on getting the head checked to see if it is warped then replaced the valve, crank, cam and balancing shaft seals along with the timing belt water pump and thermostat. The lower timing belt cover had wear from the crank pulley…..Why?

I would have the head "shaved" to obtain the best sealing surface possible. Also have the head checked for cracks, new valve stem seals, and valves reseated. Considering the other effort to do this job, the head overhaul is relatively cheap $200-$300.

I've seen the lower timing belt cover worn on a 90 Accord w/ high mileage (260k miles). The lateral thrust bearings are probably slightly worn allowing the crankshaft to wander a bit. I have the opposite (more concerning) problem w/ my 94EX currently. On startup the timing belt area emits a loud squeal. I replaced the T'belts early to check and only thing I could conclude was the crankshaft is allowing the timing belt drive sprocket to move towards the engine enough to contact the oil pump housing (end of engine). It only does this on startup and as soon as oil pressure is present noise stops.

I repaired my lower timing belt cover w/ auto body filler over a plastic screen mesh. After smoothing and painting it was barely noticeable, but may not have lasted. I sold the car and don't know whether problem returned.

good luck

I checked the crank end play in regard to wear on the timing belt lower cover and nothing to cause the wear found.

If you're sure that crankshaft end play is not the problem, the only other possibility is the harmonic balancer is wobbling, perhaps worn out. They do fail. I had one fail on a Acura 2.5TL that caused loads of problems.

good luck

The guys at the Honda dealer I used to work at said it happens from oil deforming the cover. I am just going to put it together with all the failed parts replaced and see what happens. The bolt holes in the cover are damaged so that is was on the list already. I am more worried about the condition of the cylinders. There are some dark spots in the cylinders and one Honda tech said get a new motor and another one I used to work with said it will be fine. The engine was running without any smoke or power loss before disassembly, but would blow coolant out of the radiator when cold during cranking then be fine. After an hour of idling it would overheat with the fans working. The head is warped .007 across the two middle cylinders. It is out being cracked tested and milled.

On a good note I found a Honda Dealer selling their parts on line for what looks to be 29% off. Below is their link. Majestic Honda

I think your engine will be fine w/ a new head gasket.

Watch out for Majestic Honda's S&H charges. I thought they were excessive. I thought Bill Kay Honda Parts of Dallas was better. I've also had some good prices from asian-auto-parts.com, but not as convenient since they don't have an online catalog.

good luck

I was just happy to not be paying list. The best I have done is get 10% since getting out of the dealership. I will compare with Bill Kay.

Thanks Chris
