also i would like to know if shops will give you written estimates. i got mine over the phone (1700) for rebuild plus labor. i would love to have this in writing so i dont get billed more than the estimate

Never had a rebuild but I did have a 4X4 (front end) worked on once. I'd plan on the car being tied up for a week, that's probably a safe bet. You can get a written estimate however with something like the transmission you will not nail down anybody to a fixed price. They will tell you there's many surprises they can encounter once they get into the thing. Transmissions are tough, your really at their mercy and in my opinion they know it. Be sure your comfortable with the shop you choose.

One other thing, you say "1700 plus labor." The way I take that statement is that it doesn't include labor. Is that correct? If so that sounds like a lot of money. Basically what they end up using is rebuild kits that most people can purchase anywhere and your looking at no where near that kind of money. If that's without labor you will be looking at well over 2,000.

For my 95 Accord LX, I purchased a used transmission with just over 70K miles for $200 that I found on Craigslist. Prior to finding that I was just about to purchase a JDM transmission for $250 in the Orlando area. I purchased a JDM transmission for my 2000 Accord for $400 and it had approximately 50K miles on it. It runs great and except for swapping out two sensors from my old transmission (since the connectors on two of the sensors were slightly different) it was a perfect fit. The only difference that I have found is the final drive gearing is slightly shorter than the original. Acceleration is better now but the speedometer seems to be off by 3-4 miles per hour. I felt this was a small price to pay for an overhaul or a rebuilt transmission.
